There are around 500 million small-scale and smallholder farms in the world. Mostly
located in the developing world, they are family-owned or operated, often poor and
food insecure and have limited access to agricultural know-how, services and
markets. Despite this, smallholders feed two thirds of the world’s population and,
in Asia and Sub-Saharan Africa, they are responsible for 80 percent of the food supply.
To recognize the huge role that smallholders play in feeding the world and supporting
their local economies, BASF is partnering with food and farm organizations to help
build knowledge, expertise, sustainable practices, and ultimately prosperity in
smallholder communities. Take a look at our collaboration projects and see how they
are contributing to smallholder success and the U.N. Sustainability Goals.
